What Does Spaying & Neutering Entail?

Although many pet owners have heard of spaying and neutering and may have a general idea of what they encompass, it’s important to have all the information you need to make confident health decisions for your pet. That’s why our friendly and knowledgeable veterinary staff is here to break down what each procedure entails and give you a better understanding of how they can benefit your pet.

Spaying, also called ovariohysterectomy, refers to the surgical removal of a female pet’s ovaries and uterus. By removing your female pet’s reproductive organs, you significantly reduce their chances of developing ovarian or uterine cancer. Spaying can also curb unwanted behavior typically associated with heat cycles. Neutering, also called castration, is the surgical process of removing your male pet’s testicles. Like spaying, neutering can eliminate your pet’s chances of developing certain cancers, like testicular cancer.

Our Spay & Neuter Process

At My Pets Veterinary Urgent Care and Wellness, we’ve spent years improving our Kirkland spay and neuter process for dogs and cats alike. We’ll start by having you bring your pet in for an initial examination. Our veterinarian and their team will take detailed x-ray images of your pet’s body. For example, if we notice a problem that could complicate your pet’s surgery, we’ll move forward with treating it before starting the process.

Once we’ve determined that your pet is a good candidate and healthy enough for surgery, we’ll schedule the procedure. On the day of your pet’s surgery, you’ll drop your pet off with our veterinary team while we prepare and take them in for surgery. As a same-day procedure, you can come back later in the day to pick them up. Our team will give you detailed post-operation instructions, including providing a cone to help prevent them from irritating their incision site and pain medication to control their discomfort.

Spay & Neuter FAQs

If you have any questions about our spay and neuter pet services, our team is here for you. We’ll answer your questions and help you make confident and informed health decisions. Some of the most frequently asked questions about our services include:

What age should my pet be spayed or neutered?

It all depends on whether you have a cat or a dog and their age. Typically, for dogs, we recommend that they be at least 6 months of age. For cats, the recommended age is 5 months. Our veterinarian will sit down with you and determine if your pet is the right age for sterilization.

Will my pet be put under during spaying or neutering?

Yes. Your pet will be placed under general anesthesia for the procedure. You can breathe easy knowing that our experienced team will closely monitor your pet during the entire process.

Does my pet need to be fully vaccinated before the procedure?

Yes. We normally recommend that your pet be up to date on their vaccinations before bringing them in for either neutering or spaying.

How long will it take for my pet to recover?

Typically, pets fully recover 10-14 days after their surgery. However, it’s all dependent on how closely post-operative instructions are followed and your pet’s individual recovery ability.
