Why Dental X-Rays Matter for Your Pet

Much of your pet's dental health is hidden below the gumline, where it can't be evaluated through a visual exam alone. Dental X-rays allow our veterinary team to see the tooth roots, surrounding bone, and other structures beneath the gums. This gives us a more complete picture of your pet's oral health and can reveal painful or potentially serious problems that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Dental imaging is especially important when we suspect issues such as fractured or damaged teeth, tooth root infections, periodontal disease, bone loss, or abnormalities beneath the gumline. X-rays can also help identify retained or unerupted teeth and determine whether a tooth that appears normal on the surface is healthy underneath. Because pets often continue eating and behaving normally despite dental pain, imaging can be particularly valuable for detecting problems they can't tell us about.

Dental X-rays also help us make informed decisions about treatment. Before an extraction, imaging allows the veterinarian to evaluate the tooth roots and surrounding structures and plan the procedure appropriately. After certain extractions, additional images may be taken to confirm that the entire tooth and root have been removed. By combining a thorough oral examination with dental imaging, we can diagnose problems more accurately and recommend treatment based on what is happening both above and below the gumline.
